Damiano Fornasiere

I am a Senior Research Scientist at LawZero, an AI safety research institute founded by Yoshua Bengio. Prior to that, I held the same role at Mila — Quebec AI Institute. I have been working on the (mathematical) foundation of the Scientist AI and, more recently, on language models’ ‘situational awareness’.

I obtained a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Barcelona in 2025, with a thesis on duality theory and algebraic logic, supervised by Tommaso Moraschini and Joan Gispert. During that time, I conducted research visits at the University of Oxford and University of Tandil, and completed MATS with Tom Everitt, Jonathan Richens, and Victoria Krakovna (Google DeepMind). I hold an M.Sc. in Logic (Mathematics track) from the ILLC, University of Amsterdam, where I worked on the classical problem of understanding which partially ordered sets can be represented as spectra, supervised by Nick Bezhanishvili and Tommaso Moraschini. Earlier, I obtained a B.Sc. in Mathematics at the University of Padua, where I studied constructive mathematics with Giovanni Sambin and Francesco Ciraulo.

I am always excited to collaborate; if you are too, feel free to send me an email. For formal supervision, you can reach me at my work address for internships, or apply to one of the programs where I mentor (currently MATS, Pivotal, and SPAR).
